Top Ten Tuesday: Books With Single-Word Titles

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

For some reason it took me ages to think of books with one word titles, despite the fact that I have apparently read quite a lot. Although to be far to me, I haven’t read any since early last year.

Well anyway, here are ten of my top single-word titled books

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

This book has such an interesting and original story. If you haven’t read it yet you really must.

East by Edith Pattou

This may kind of count as cheating as it was released as ‘North Child’ in the UK, although the version I read was ‘East’. This story is a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon and is so so good. There is a sequel but I haven’t read it yet and honestly I don’t know if I will, I really loved the ending of this one.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

I actually don’t know how many times I’ve read this book. Weirdly, I think of it as a sort of comfort read.

Beauty by Robin McKinley

This is a really sweet book, it’s a retelling/expansion of Beauty and the Beast. If you love the Disney film you’ll definitely love this book. McKinley’s other retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Rose Daughter is very original and unique. I’d recommend both although I personally do prefer Beauty.

Heartburn by Nora Ephron

Despite being about a woman who is getting divorced from her cheating husband this is a really funny and enjoyable book. Nora Ephron just seems to be able to make any situation funny.

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

This is technically a short story from Le Fanu’s ‘In A Glass Darkly’. But it has since been published as a standalone, as have many of the short stories from the collection. Carmilla was written and published before Dracula and is about a lesbian vampire so obviously I love it.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Who doesn’t like Mary Shelley? No for real tell me so I can fight them.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

Unsurprisingly this list is pretty much just Gothic novels and fairytale retellings. Well if you didn’t already know what my favourite genres are I guess you do now. Dracula’s really great, although Carmilla will always be my number one vampire book. Weirdly I have read Dracula more times though.

Winter by Marissa Meyer

This is my favourite book in The Lunar Chronicles series. Partly because Winter is my favourite character but also because it’s just so good. I had to include both the old and new covers because look at them, they’re both so pretty!

Wolf-speaker by Tamora Pierce

This counts right? The Immortals is such a good series. Like many of Pierce’s series it’s set in the world Tortall. So far I’ve only read two of the series but the rest are definitely on my tbr.
